What is a Noise Reduction System?
Simply stated, a noise reduction system is any type of device that attempts to "hide" or mask distracting noises that originate outside of your immediate surrounding environment. Marketed under such terms as "Sound Masking", "Sound Therapy" and "Sound Conditioning", the objective of each is to inject either a structured sound or a non-structured sound into your field of hearing.
Non-Structured Sound - Normally consists of white noise, pink noise, or some combination of the two. The masking sounds produced by these types of systems are most often compared to the smooth "swooshing" sound of air blowing from a central AC system. When gradually introduced into an environment, the sounds produced by these types of systems are very unobtrusive, yet can be very effective at reducing the apparent level of unwanted noises and distractions. Non-structured sound is most commonly used in systems referred to as "Sound Masking Systems" and is suitable for both home and office applications.
Structured Sound - Sounds that are distinguishable and easily identifiable. Music, nature sounds, a heartbeat, rainfall, a thunderstorm and tropical birds are examples of structured sounds. This type of sound is best-suited for home use since structured sounds that are pleasing to one person may be objectionable to another in an office environment.
How can I benefit from a Noise Reduction System?
At the office, you can reduce distractions caused by . . .
- co-workers in an open-office environment
- a co-worker in an adjacent enclosed office
- noise in an adjacent hallway or break room
- traffic from a nearby street or highway
- sounds from an adjacent warehouse
At home, you can improve your level of sleep and relaxation if you're disturbed by . . .
- snoring
- noisy neighbors
- highway noise
- barking dogs
- nearby businesses
- loud music
On the road . . .
- noisy hotel guests
- air traffic noise from a nearby airport
What type of Noise Reduction System is best for me?
To assist in the proper selection of your Noise Reduction System, we've separated the systems into three categories as shown below.
- Home Noise Reduction - this category consists of both structured and non-structured sound generating systems. All are capable of running on normal household voltage (120VAC) and some are portable (battery operated) as well.
The primary consideration is to select a system sound that is best suited to your normal sleeping and relaxation habits. If you're the type that requires a very quiet environment to relax or fall asleep, then we would recommend one of the non-structured sound systems such as the Sonet QT™ Individual Sound Masking System or one of the Sound Screen Sound Conditioners. On the other hand, if the sound of a radio or TV lulls you to sleep, you'll find the structured sound systems more to your liking. The Programmable Sound Conditioner or one of the Sound Oasis systems would be a good choice.
- Office Noise Reduction - all Noise Reduction Systems in this category produce non-structured sound which is preferrable for office environments. The Sonet QT™ Individual Sound Masking System is a completely electronic sound generator, performs very well in both cubicle and enclosed office environments and can be expanded from 2 to 4 emitters by adding an extension kit. The Sound Screen Sound Conditioners incorporate electro-mechanical sound generators at a more economical price.
- Portable Noise Reduction - the same recommendations as Home Noise Reduction apply here. The primary requirement for this category is that the system either runs on batteries or has an optional battery pack available for truly portable use.
